La Cueva del Chango is one of Playa’s best kept secrets and a real insider’s tip! It’s the perfect way to start your day in peace and tranquility, have a chilled-out lunch or a romantic culinary dinner experience. La Cueva del Chango is a restaurant-bar built in and with nature. Wood and natural stone are the main materials used to create this open-sided palapa. Wateris ever-present with waterfalls and fish ponds – even the restrooms have a waterfall sink! With birds flying around in the jungle garden(which also hosts a nursery) the natural touch is complete.

At La Cueva you always have your choice of all fruit in season for your juices, fruit salads and other creations. Create your own mix or go with one of Pedro’s excellent suggestions. Expect it to be fresh: home-made rye bread, freshly made salsas, fresh fish and salads. Even the tortillas are made “en casa”, a rare treat! The Huevos Rancheros here are a must!

The lunch menu has a wide variety of salads and other Mexican treats. For years La Cuevawas not open for dinner. Now you can enjoy the new natural Mexican cuisine concept for any meal. At night try the shrimp breaded with Xcatic chile and cinnamon. Other favorites include the habanero chile cream soup (hot but tasty!) and the fresh tuna fish tostadas.

The bar serves fresh juices in all mixed drinks and cocktails. The wine selection includes a large variety of Mexican wines. The owners, Pedro and Andres will make sure you get the best quality and will do their best to accommodate special requests. Add to this reasonable prices, a natural and fresh ambient with Latin music and La Cueva del Changois an all around pleasant experience.

Cueva Del Chango is perfectly located on 38th street between 5th ave and the beach. Might need to look around to find it since the entrance fades away with the jungle and trees on the outside.

Canibal Royal

A new and eclectic gourmet beach club restaurant and lounge with a Brazilian architecture inspired in the 1950’s.  Take a trip back in time while you listen to the most hip lounge music, sample one of their tropical drinks, and enjoy an amazing view of Playa Del Carmen’s caribbean sea. The food menu is among the best you can find in town. Creators of Diablito Cha Cha Cha and Santanera night clubs have blended their unique style and brought it to the sea. Food includes a mix of regions from Brasil, Peru, Africa and, of course, Mexico. Try the Anticucho, if you love sea food you can’t go wrong, or the Basil-On for a unique purple Mojito.

Canibal Royal is a unique place for those who are looking for a sophisticated experience in Playa Del Carmen. This place truly shows what living in Playa is all about.

Location. Simple. 48 street and the beach.

LE CHEF – COZUMEL

By SkinniFoodCritic

I have spent many years on this wondrous trocial paradise known as Cozumel, and of all the places I’ve frequented over the years, one restaurant stands out from all others.  I don’t say this lightly either; there are a surprisingly large number of quality eateries on this cozy little island, but Lalo and his “Le Chef” scores top marks for food, ambience, and personality.

Besides the adorable “bistro” flair this eatery exudes; Lalo takes immense pride in his creations, and he won’t hesitate to sacrifice a fuller menu in order to follow his belief that anything he offers must be fresh.  Whether it’s vegetables, selections from under the sea, or any other carnivorous selections, Le Chef will not offer anything that has been frozen.

If it wasn’t caught by a local fisherman, Le Chef removes it from the menu.

An ever-changing culinary experience is one of the rewards of this style of menu-making.  I’ve eaten at Le Chef 5 times in a single week, and each day the anticipation of what may have been caught earlier that day is enticement enough to join Le Chef for a meal.  Even when the same item appears on the menu, Lalo won’t hesitate to add something different or extra to the dish to turn your taste buds on in a different way than the night before.

Where is it located?

Actually, Le Chef has moved to the cozy building (typical Mayan home circa 1899) down the street that Lobsteria used to be in. It’s now at the corner of Avenida 5 and Calle 7 in Cozumel Island. We recently ate there and it’s the same Le Chef we love. Interestingly, Lalo has created a new restaurant where Le Chef used to be called “Olive”. That’s located at Avenida 5 and Calle 5. We’ve eaten several times at both restaurants and we’ve got to say that Olive has already won our hearts and our taste buds, and deciding whether to eat at Le Chef or Olive is not an easy task!

EL ALUX

The mystical entrance we discovered was the restaurant and bar called El Alux. Alux is a Mayan word for a spirit or sprite, and the restaurant of El Alux certainly holds an unearthly appeal. Built into true subterranean palaces, decorated with real singular stalactites and stalagmites within one of the famous cenotes, El Alux offers a completely unique dining experience.

In these surroundings you will be able to enjoy a natural spectacle accompanied of a selection of regional and international cuisine, in an environment of music and pre-Hispanic dance. The Playa del Carmen restaurant of El Alux is an unique experience that won’t soon be forgotten!

  • Open from 6:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m
  • Av. Juárez, Mz. 217 Lote 2, Colonia Ejidal, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

BYBLOS
French Restaurant & Wine Bar first class all the way. We personally believe that this is one of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen! The main characteristic of this place is that the owners keep the essence of the traditional cuisine from their original recipes.
Owner Sylvie, has successfully managed to carve her French role into the Playa del Carmen dinning scene. The flowing white linen and low candlelight delight its French romance. Sylvie’s staff is professional and will stop at nothing to ensure you enjoy your dinning experience. Also they have a nice wine selection for Playa!
• Open from 6 pm to 1 am and closed on Sundays. We recommend that you reserve a table ahead of time, just to be safe.

• Phone: 984-8031790. You can ask for Christian and Silvie Goetz.

• Located between 5th Ave. and 10th Ave. on 14th street.

This cozy French restaurant and wine baris first class all the way. Located just off the busy 5th Ave, it’s a quaint escape from the hustle and bustle. Owner Sylvie, has successfully managed to carve her French niche into the Playa del Carmen dinning scene.

Some of Byblos elegant dishes include Duck Foie Gras sautéed with vegetables and cider and served on a bed of apples. Escargot andFrench onion soup also top the list of favorite French delights.
